Belfry halted a 33 game winning streak for the Panthers in '89, the third longest streak in state history at the time. Pikeville averaged 44 points per game during that three year run and topped 50 points eighteen times. The Bobby Deramus and Greg Hackney led wishbone punished opposing defenses in '87 and '88, and the Panthers proved they were more than just one special class by winning it all again in '89. The Panthers had a state runner-up finish in 1979 and were consistently among the best in EKY, but the rest of class 1A knew nothing of the storm that was brewing in Pike County. Now sustain it for 34 years with several coaching changes along the way. Roger Gruneisen kept the fire going with trophies in '80 and '83, giving way to the man Beatty hurdled to become Trinity's greatest coach, Dennis Lampley. He added a second title four years later, before handing the baton to Dave Moore, who ran off three championships in five years ('73, '76, '77). Joe Morris had to know he'd be compared to Jack before he ever coached his first game.
Bourbon Co., Harrison Co. and Nicholas Co. will each have new coaches this year. He sports an 11 and 89 record to go along with a .111 winning percentage. His first year leading the Indians resulted in 11 wins and 18 losses, which equates for a .340 winning percentage. Terry King- Bracken Co.- Coach King was a new coach at Bracken Co. last year where the Polar Bears went 11 and 20, good for a .354 winning percentage. Steve Fromeyer- Scott- Coach Fromeyer has amassed a 121 and 125 record, good for a .492 winning percentage. His winning percentage stands at .692 and he has won 6 district titles. Brent Sowder- Campbell Co.- Coach Sowder exceeded expectations in his first year leading the Camels and holds a 27 and 7 record and a .794 winning percentage.

Aside from seven state titles, the Tigers had four runner-up finishes and had their season end at the hands of the eventual state champion on six other occasions. St. Xavier averaged 11 wins a year from Glaser's first championship in 1986 to his final season in 2012. The Bluebirds steadily climbed the national wins list until topping off at #2 before he retired. Since 2000, Trinity hasn't gone more than one year between championships. The 2011 Shamrocks were declared national champions by a handful of outlets and were the centerpiece of a 33 game win streak from '10-'12.

I see 6-5 with that schedule and one of those wins will be a toss-up. I see 8-4 for the football Wildcats with that schedule….anything less and it is time to hit the dusty trails for the old coach. Yet, with single-minded purpose he’d get up as quickly as possible and try to deliver his charge, knowing that was his role on this team. And every Friday night he was there, at the game, filling water bottles with his good hand, forcing his way through players, and sprinting onto the field during every timeout. Still, don’t let Adam hear you putting down the team; he’d have none of that. At school Adam defended the team vehemently, which wouldn’t have been easy since we really weren’t very good. Adam was getting ready to start 8th Grade and loved the idea of being involved with the team. I remember when he came home after the first practice and told us that he was going to have to run the 100-meter dash because the coach required EVERYONE to run an event.

The last 17 years of football on Pond Creek have been the most dominant run in EKY history, with Haywood becoming Kentucky's all-time winningest coach along the way. Those teams didn't prepare for the wishbone, coupled with JC's talent level being up and perfectly suited for that offense. In a 10-year window where those two programs were basically intertwined with the same coaches, you are talking about nine Class 3A Titles won by one or the other. It began with the late, legendary Bob Schneider and concluded with one of Kentucky's great young coaches, Eddie Eviston. Pikeville ran off three consecutive championships in the late 80s, the first such feat in state history. Mayfield was recognized in 1978 as the top team in the state, regardless of class, by the Litkenhous poll. I guess 57 wins in 58 games and three state titles in four years will have to do. Despite being 1A for all those years, the Tigers routinely played up in class and won way more than they lost, even scoring several wins over 3A power Covington Catholic. Earlier that season, BG was breathing down the neck of Trinity's state record 50 wins in a row before McCallie (TN) snapped the streak at 48.
